Step by Step Singapore MRT Travel Card Guide

If you are hoping to use public transportation in Singapore it’s easier for you to get and top up this EZ Link card. If you are staying for a long term purchase this card for your daily use. Even if you are a tourist this is much cheaper for you. It’s easier and cheaper than buying tickets.

You can check out the Video tutorial here:

  1. If you are new to Singapore you can purchase these cards from the information counter of any MRT station. When I was in Singapore one card was SGD 10 (You better check the price with the information counter at the station). When you purchase the card SGD 5 will be deducted as the price of the card and SGD 5 will remain as the balance. You can use this to travel
  2. You can top up your card from the top up machines with cash or debit/credit cards. Check how to top up this EZ link MRT Card in the video above.
  3. There are different payment methods to top up your card. When you select the “Add value” option you will be able to see all of these methods. For the cash option, they accept only SGD 2, SGD 5, SGD 10 and SGD 50 notes. After you insert notes the screen will display the total amount of notes. Then press “OK”.
  4. When the transaction is successful it displays the total amount on your card. If you want you can get a receipt. Don’t forget to take your card from the tray!!!
  5. If you are unable to purchase an EZ link card or if you forgot your card at home/hotel you can purchase a standard ticket.
  6. To purchase a standard ticket, Once you select the “standard ticket” option, You can select your payment option. Only the coins and notes displayed on the screen are accepted.
  7. Afterwards, you can select your destination and get your standard ticket.
  8. Before you enter the platform, tap on the platform gate. It indicates the amount on your card. If the amount is insufficient the mini screen display a reminder to top up.

BONUS TIP: When you are on the platform you will see several maps. There are display boards indicating the route of the train arriving at each platform. Make sure to confirm the route and the platform before you get on the train. Once you get down from your destination tap your card to go out. Then it will deduct the total cost of your journey and indicate the remaining balance on your card.

That’s it! Have a safe journey!!
